Austwick Amble Race Routes and Timings

Event Logistics

The event is held in conjunction with Austwick’s Annual Street Market which means that there will be a large influx of visitors.  Please arrive early to ensure that you can get parked reasonably close by.  As the Main Street in Austwick will be closed to traffic, you will need to park in one of the approach roads to the village (Clapham Road or Graystonber Road) or in the dedicated parking field in Graystonber Lane.

Toilets can be found inside  Austwick Parish Hall located  on the Main Street.  Food and drink can also be purchased from the parish hall or at numerous stalls in the Street Market.

It is run over a loop circuit of approximately 8 miles/13 km and covers a total ascent of 1200 ft/370m. The outward journey over the first 4 miles passes through the beautiful Crummackdale limestone scenery and briefly joins Sulber Nick (which connects the Yorkshire peaks of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough). The return leg descends slowly back through spectacular scenery to Austwick, and to the start point on the village green, with the closing section on tarmac road.

The current record for men is 48 mins 25 secs (Andy Norman – Altrincham & District AC) set in 2023 and for women it is 55 mins 59 secs (Lizzy Allison – Settle Harriers) set in 2024. There is a bonus of £50 on offer if the winning man or woman breaks either of these records !

Junior Races

Ages for all Junior Races are as at 31/12/26 as per FRA rules. There is a minimum age limit of 8 years old on the day of the race, in order to comply with FRA rules. There are no exceptions – apologies for any disappointment this may cause.

Please also note that the age-groups for juniors have changed by the FRA to “even” number years as reflected below.

The combined Under 10 and Under 12 Race will set off at 11:20am and is 2km.

The start will be slightly out of the village on Town Head Lane by the junction with Hall Close. Runners will proceed up Town Head Lane (steep uphill) then turn left into Thwaite Lane at the top of the hill and immeditely right into Dear Bought Plantation field.  They will follow flags in the field for 360m until they reach a marked turnaround point.  From here they return by the same route but finish on the village green.

The record is 7 mins 25 secs (Calum McGoldrick – Settle Harriers) set in 2023. The girls record is 7 mins 42 secs (Poppie Phillipson – Birtley AC) set in 2022.

Under 10 and Under 12 Race route map

The Under 14 Race will set off at 11:45 am and is 2.53km.

Under 14s will start at the Game Cock Inn, running out of the village, turning left up Townhead Lane.  At the top of a steep climb on tarmac, they will reach the crossroads with Thwaite Lane where they will turn left then almost immediately right into a field (Dear Bought Plantation Field).  They will then complete a clockwise circuit of the field, keeping marker flags on their right at all times. On completing the circuit of the field, they will be directed out of the field and back down Townhead Lane, retracing the outward route to the finish on the village green.

The record is 9 mins 26 secs (James Bowen – Ambleside AC) set in 2016. The girls record is 9 mins 50 secs (Poppie Phillipson – Birtley AC) set in 2023.

Under 14 Race route map

The Under 16 Race will set off at 12.15pm and is approximately 3.17km.

Under 16s will follow the clockwise circuit to start with but at the far end of the field will be directed through a narrow gate and will then briefly follow the senior & U17s route up a short climb to a finger post that will be marshalled. At the finger post, they will then be directed back down the outward route, through the gate and into Dear Bought Plantation Field where they will complete the clockwise circuit of the field before returning to the finish on the village green.

The record is 11 mins 45 secs (Jack Sanderson – Settle Harriers) set in 2022. The girls record is 12 mins 32 secs (Mia McGoldrick – Settle Harriers) set in 2025.

Under 16 Race route map

The Under 18 and Under 20 Races set off at 12.15 (alongside the Under 16s) and are approximately 4.31km.

The course will be the same for both age groups (but there will be separate prizes awarded).  Runners will follow the same route as the Under 16s but will continue beyond the finger-post (turnaround point for Under 16s) until they reach Checkpoint 1 of the senior race (just before a wall and ladder-stile).  They will then be directed to return to the village following the same route (no lap of the Dear Bought Plantation Field).

The record is 17 mins 45 secs (Robbie Watmough of Settle Harriers) in 2025.  The girls record is 18 mins 29 secs (Emily Gibbins – Ilkley H) set in 2022.
