Cuckoo Theme
This years theme will
be 'Food & Drink' Please
have a go, however big or small. For those living away from the centre of the
village, cuckoos may be displayed outside Austwick Parish Church so that
everyone can enjoy them. There will be prizes for the best cuckoos. Please get
them out on display by Friday the 23rd and do not forget to register
your entry at the Village Shop.
New initiatives.
There will again be a
cuckoo merchandise stall with Tee-shirts, mugs, whistles so please support this
stall. Lots of children's' activities are held in the village including a merry
go round, donkey rides games and children's entertainers. To help alleviate
parking problems, we shall be operating a 'shuttle bus' and hopefully, we will
have some off street parking.
Road Closure.
For safety, Austwick will
be closed to through traffic from the Village Cross to Austwick Primary School
on Monday the 26th May during the opening
period of the Street Market. We hope that this will not inconvenience anyone.
Programmes & entry.
As in previous years, we
will encourage adult visitors to the event to buy a programme on entry for 50p.
Previously we printed free entry slips for all village residents but last year
only three were used, so we felt that these were not necessary again this year.
Your help is needed.
Car and window stickers
will be posted to each household. We really need your help in displaying
publicity for the event.
We are also looking for
people to kindly bake scones to sell on the day; your help is greatly
appreciated. Volunteers are still needed for a number of tasks on the day. If
you can help then please call Andy on 015242 51766.
Thank you
Thank you for your
generous support, it is much appreciated. The event is a community effort, we
hope it is fun and not
just hard work. Special thanks to the Gamecock for supplying bottles for this
years 'Spirit Diary' (some dates are still available; please ask a committee
member.

The 2007 Street Market
In the early hours with the village only just
beginning to wake up
the Hog Grill was already turning

The Hog Roast was again one of the star
attractions. It is not an everyday
event to be able to enjoy food prepared by
first class Chefs. The Hog Roast was provided by The Austwick Traddock Hotel,
cooked by and carved by staff from the hotel and supervised by hotel owner Bruce
Reynolds. The 'hog' was from a local organic and free range source.

Setting up this year was very testing as dark
clouds hovered casting a shadow
on everything but there was no stopping, "the
show must go on"

The Street Market was officially opened by
Councillor David Ireton
who then went a walk about with Street Market
Secretary Sheila Bowker.

The organisers always give a lot of attention
in keeping younger visitors occupied.
Punch and Judy is always very popular with
young and old and never goes out of fashion
;Punch and Judy made their first appearance
over three hundred years ago.

Brian Gore, a regular artiste at the Austwick
Street Market
worked extremely hard at keeping kids
thoughts away from the rain
that kept on with regular outbreaks. It must
be hard to remain funny with water
running down ones neck. A real trooper...

With or without rain coats it can be fun
having a traditional
donkey ride.

One of
several guiding cuckoos from the
newly instigated 'Cuckoo Trail'
The
theme for this years Cuckoo Competition was 'Music'
Part of the
annual festivities includes a competition for the best cuckoo display. This is
open to residents and the winner receives a prize of £25.
Some of
the many entries in this year's
Cuckoo Competition.

It's been a hectic, fun and
action-packed weekend in Austwick! First
event was the disco dance on Friday night
with the fancy dress theme of the letter 'C'. Costumes included chefs, cyclists,
cowgirls, Clint Eastwood, cricketers, Charlie Chaplin, Chicago Girls and
construction workers. Winning outfits in the different age categories resembled,
with alarming likeness, a cucumber, a cockerel and Compo (from 'Last of
the Summer Wine').
Thanks to members of Lawkland Young
Farmers for their great organisation. The poor weather didn't deter Saturday's
Playing Field Association > games, races and sports event which was followed by
a barbecue and social, however Sunday's showers did keep the numbers low
for the traditional Wes's Walk.
Those
who did brave the cold had a wonderful walk over Oxenber and enjoyed the
spring flowers which were in their prime, and hot drinks and biscuits in
the Parish Hall afterwards were much appreciated.
Bank Holiday Monday saw an even worse turn in
the weather, but it didn't stop crowds in their
thousands thronging round the village greens which were > jammed with a
multitude of entertainment's at the annual Street Market/Cuckoo Festival. The
event was officially opened by Councillor David Ireton, who wished the
event every success. There was the usual street market where everything
from china vases to 3-piece suites were bought at bargain prices. Live
music was provided by The Boskats and > included jazz and rock n' roll numbers.
Children enjoyed bouncy castles and slides, donkey rides, Jukalo the
juggler, Punch and Judy, tombola, bran tub, skittles and a coconut shie, whilst
older visitors browsed over the stalls selling books, food, clothes,
cuckoo T-shirts and mugs, an art exhibition and displays by Cave Rescue
and Yorkshire Dales National Park. The owls and birds of prey
display by Corio Raptor Rescue Centre were a huge interest to all, as was
the array of food available including, cream scones, ice cream, bacon butties,
pie n' peas, hog roast, and teas and refreshments in the Parish Hall.
The Austwick Amble Fell race attracted a good
number of entrants in all ages, even though they had to be warned
before setting off to take a warm jacket with them due to the low
temperature. The Cuckoo Trail was a big success with many families walking the
pretty route over the Little Bridges whilst finding lots of hidden
'cuckoos', and many of the houses had made and displayed cuckoos,
following this year's theme of music. Hence, there were cuckoos resembling
Elvis, Chris de Burgh, "the Cuckoo Waltz", "Bye bye blackbird", "All
things bright and beautiful" and 'Settle Voices'.
The organising committee would like to thank
everyone in and around the village for their tremendous hard work over the
weekend.
