What is an ACCESS POINT?  

Any point in a network where a user can connect to that network.

What is an ACCESS NODE?    

The main transmission point within a WLAN

What is BROADBAND?     

A technique for sending data, video and voice traffic over long distances at very high speeds.

What is a FIREWALL?

A program or hardware preventing unauthorised entry to and from a network or computer.

What is GHz?                

Gigahertz a unit of frequency measurement. 1 GHz is equal to 1 billion events per second

What is IAP?                 

Intranet Access Point

What is an INTRANET?        

A local network private to a company or group

What is ISDN?                       

Integrated Services Digital Network

What is an ISP?                 

Internet Service Provider

What is Kbps?                       

Kilobits per second 1 kbps equals 1024 bits per second

What is LAN?        

Local Area Network within a small area e.g. a business        

What is Mbps?                       

Megabits per second 1 Mbps equals 1024 Kbps

What is a WAN?                        

Wide Area Network

What is WAP?                

Wireless Application Protocol

What is a WLAN?              

Wireless LAN covers a wide area e.g. a village

What is 56k? 

The normal speed of a standard BT or ISP supply. 56k is the current connection of a modem connecting to a normal dial up telephone line (never achieved for user data throughput, a very unreliable standard.

What is 802.11a?  

5GHz microwave band offering 54mbps wireless transfer.  A costly alternative to 802.11b or 802.11g.  Costly and widely unsupported by community WLAN.

What is 802.11b?   

The standard/original wireless band running at 2.4GHz.  This is the most common band in use although the newer 802.11g bands have superseded it.  Cheap.

What is 802.11g?   

The newer 54mbps band running at 2.4GHz.  This is the new standard for wireless communication.  Sharing the same band as 802.11b, most new equipment supports the old standard as well.   This is also cheaper than 802.11.  Uses the same external antennas as 802.11b.
